Meta-Assignment

The Meta-Assignment helped me understand the process of art and how each of the steps relates to one another. I truly believe in presentation should be the final step and the most important one because that is the one that the audience is looking at, but before applying good presentation, the artist has to use tools, resolution and experimentation in order to have proper documentation and reflection of the work.

CAM Raleigh: Ornament and Pattern

This article starts with explaining that pattern is essential to life because sentient beings perceive pattern to make sense, which in a way it's true. It also mentions that ornament and pattern are form-based languages that offers a good read when successful and it gives an explanation of what ornament is and the many types of ornaments, how they are used differently and their meanings.

This article is very interesting for people who are interested in decorating by using ornaments and how to create patterns. In my opinion people can become very creative by using different patterns and ornaments in order to make an image, artwork or any object look good.

Ornament and the Sources of Design in the Decorative Arts

Ivins, William M. ""Ornament" and the Sources of Design in the Decorative Arts." The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin 13, no. 2 (1918): 35-41

The article is about the importance of ornaments and the different styles of ornaments and the craftsmanship. Ornaments are designs that are used to make something look more attractive but usually having no practical purpose. Ornaments can be considered decorative art because engravers have been making their own style of ornaments for centuries, and it shows a list of engravers with their own style and how they used it. Even until today, the collection of decorative art has educated more collectors than the craftsmen based on the design and the craftsmanship.

This article can help people understand the concept of design and craftsmanship, how to understand how those are two different things and understanding the difference between the two. Artists can consider adding ornaments to certain of their works; many artists decide to give ornaments to their pieces in order to make it look more attractive. Ornaments and decorative art are important pieces to art because it can make them look better, and for centuries many types of ornaments have been crafted.

The Creative Impulse Wrap-Up

This first topic at WARP was at first a little challenging for me because it was my first time taking this class and understanding the concept and structure of this class. But it also served as an experience to know how this class works and how it is structured. I feel that I have learned about being creative and understanding other artists' different styles. I enjoyed seeing some of the works that fellow students have presented in class, and they also inspire me to do better and learn more in order to be successful. Even though my major is Graphic Design and my strength is using Photoshop on the computer to assemble images together to make a good piece of work, I still learned how to do this without Photoshop. By making shoes out of materials such as cardboard and paper, and fabric it taught me in a way to be creative and also assemble pieces in order to make a design.
At first, since I didn't know the structure of the class I didn't have an idea on how to make the small works or even the In-Depth project to look great, but with certain feedback from fellow students and the instructor they motivate me to get more ideas to improve my small works and all my In-Depth projects in order to be successful in this class because that is my main goal. I really hope to learn a lot more from the upcoming topics.

In-Depth Project #1

This is my first In-Depth project. I was thinking about combining some of the techniques I used for my small works, but I also decided to make it larger and give it more details.

Small Works

When I was younger I was a shoe enthusiast. I went home and I was taking a look at shoes that I had so I decided to create 3 versions of a shoe. The first one was as a drawing because I used to draw and color images on a piece of paper when I was a little kid. The second was taking a picture of the shoe and vectorize it on Adobe Photoshop, to me that was my strongest part because I love using Photoshop and as a Graphic Designer I hope to use Photoshop for most of my works as a professional. The third one was making a 3D version of a shoe, even though it does not look exactly like the shoe I picked, I still wanted to work on a shoe and give it a good look, this one was the most time consuming because I had to design and practice with many models on how to make it good, and with a few materials that I found, like cardboard and paper, I assembled them together in order to make a nice shoe figure.

Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)
The Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) is a great place for people who are interested in art to visit. The term contemporary art refers to modern art, art that is produced at the present period in time. Inside the institute there are three rooms, each filled with works of a certain artist. The first artist is Ida Applebroog, who was a patient at Mercy Hospital in California, which is the name of her collection at ICA. Her works usually innovate with line in manners ranging from sinous and expressive to cartoonish, her works give people an understanding of communication, sexuality, and wellness with some stunning and sometimes disturbing combinations of text, cartoon, image and abstraction, most of her work was done while she was a patient at Mercy Hospital. The second artist is Renaud Jerez, a French artist whose works presents human forms consumed by architecture and technology; it is amazing to see how he combined different objects to create a humanoid figure, this style of contemporary art can inspire people to be creative and assemble different objects to try to make a figure. The third artist is Susan Te Kahurangi King, born in New Zealand and diagnosed with Autism. She was considered an outsider because she was self-taught, and she had an obsession with cartoon characters, mostly Donald Duck because it could be seen in her works, which she did by herself as a way of expression herself and what she likes, her family has preserved and recorded most of her work up to this date so that people can appreciate its contributions to art history.

People who visit the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) will learn more about contemporary and modern art. People who like to be creative and form pieces together to make a figure can definitely learn from Renaud Jerez and his works. People who find bold drawings and communication fascinating can take a look at the works of Ida Applebroog. And Susan Te Kahurangi King can show people that as a fascinated child with Autism she could express herself and show what she likes with her drawings, and have your work appreciated by family and the public. This type of art may seem different from other types of art, but people can learn from it and be inspired by most contemporary artists that have their own unique style to express themselves and be appreciated.
